2012 Totals

My main goal for the year was to once again brew at least one beer per month.  I wound up with 14 batches for ~86 gallons.  I missed April and May, but I had a decent pipeline built up by then in anticipation of the birth of my son on May 18th.

My secondary goal was to post all of my recipes here so that I would have easier access to them... that did not work out so well.

On the plus side, I won a Best in Show award at the York Country Brewfest for the Brutal Columbus batch brewed at Hanna's house in March, so there's that.

Centennial Blonde

2012 Batch #04 - Blonde (brewed 03/25/2012)

Third batch with the new Blichman Burner, this time Ryan used it for a 10 gallon Aletimate Warrior batch... and it pretty much kicked ass. There was no wind or breeze or anything, and all went well.  Oh, and we started @ 6:30 am.  No, really.

I used Ryan's gear for a blonde recipe I found on HomebrewTalk.com - all that nice weather last week had me in the mood for a nice easy drinker.  I nailed my OG and volume, but I missed my 20 minute hop addition... not a big deal though, I added it at 15.  Here is the recipe:

7.5 lbsAmerican 2-row info
.75 lbsCara-Pils® Malt; Briess info
.5 lbsAmerican Vienna info
.5 lbsCrystal Malt 10°L info
.25 ozCentennial (Pellets, 8.7 %AA) boiled 60 min. info
.25 ozCentennial (Pellets, 8.7 %AA) boiled 35 min. info
.25 ozCascade (Pellets, 6.8 %AA) boiled 20 min. info (added @ 15)
.25 ozCascade (Pellets, 6.8 %AA) boiled 5 min. info
Yeast :Safeale US-05
Mash at 150 degrees for 60 minutes (I was above 150 most of the time)

P.S. Mel is a trooper.... she painted the entire nursery by herself while we brewed

Brutal Columbus

2012 Batch #03 - IPA (brewed 03/17/2012)

Second batch with the new Blichman Burner - this time at Hanna's.  It was breezy and that still created some problems for Mr. Blichman (note the windshield).  Hanna brewed his second all grain IPA "Little Grasshopper", and I brewed what started out as a Brutal Bitter Clone.  I washed and re-pitched the yeast from the last batch of Lightbulb I brewed

Things seemed to go well, I was close to my OG, but my volume was low by a little less then a gallon (again).  I need to adjust my mash and sparge water variables to account for the equipment loss as a result of the uber-burner.

Here is the recipe:
10.5 lbsMaris Otter Pale info
1.5 lbsAmerican Vienna info
1 lbsWeyermann Carawheat®; Weyermann info
.5 lbsCrystal Malt 60°L info
.5 ozColumbus (Pellets, 13.9 %AA) boiled 60 min. info
.5 ozColumbus (Pellets, 13.9 %AA) boiled 30 min. info
1 ozColumbus (Pellets, 13.9 %AA) boiled 10 min. info
1 ozColumbus (Pellets, 13.9 %AA) boiled 1 min. info
Yeast :Fermentis US-05 Safale US-05 info
Clone should be all Crystal and use Wyeast PacMan yeast strain.... but I like Columbus.
Mashed @ 153 for ~50 minutes

Dry Hopped w/ 1oz citra (Whole Leaf, 15.6%AA)

Lightbulb v6.0

2012 Batch #02 - APA (brewed 02/25/2012)

First batch with the new Blichman Burner, it was windy.  I took some ColorNotes and saved the screenshots in the album below.  Had to make a last minute hop adjustment due to a faulty scale either at my house or at Scotzin's - adjustments in bold below.

Poochie Porter

2012 Batch #01 - Robust Porter (brewed 01/29/2012)

I brewed 8 gallons at Ryan's house; 5g for me, and 3g for the BWCC Ice Bowl. I am going to have to come up with a "Llama" name for that one... Llama Squirts is the current leader in the clubhouse.

Had a brief issue with the rubber gasket on the propane regulator, but Ryan had a spare.  I still nailed both my OG and volume so that was nice.

I milled @ Scotzins and used nylon bags for the hops
